hair questions - part 2
6. How do I cover the gray in my hair? I have locks, and my roots show very quickly after my permanent color treatment. What can I do to get the color to last?
“Consider yourself lucky that your hair grows fast,” says stylist Barry Fletcher. “But if the color from the new growth really bothers you, there’s no getting around it other than to color more often. Instead of using permanent color on the gray, try semi-permanent. It penetrates just as well, but with a lower concentration of harsh chemicals.”
“If fading is a concern, stick to products that are designed to extend the life of your hair color, like the Curlisto Colorective (Christo Fifth Avenue salon, New York City, 212-997-8800) collections of shampoos and conditioners,” Turner adds.
7. I have alopecia around my temples, and I truly need a remedy for regrowth. Can you help a sister out?
Susan Taylor explains: “Alopecia basically means hair loss. There are many different kinds, with as many different treatments. Because each is treated differently, it’s important that you see a dermatologist at the first sign of thinning so that she can get you on the right medication and treatment plan. If you don’t see any follicles, or if the scalp appears shiny and smooth, it could be too late to generate hair growth.”
8. I sleep in rollers every night, yet my hair is flat, shapeless and frizzy. I have shoulder-length hair, which I don’t want to cut. How can I save my style?
Fletcher says, “Instead of sleeping in rollers, add a small amount of setting lotion to your dry hair at night, then set with rollers. Sit under a dryer for five to ten minutes, long enough for the setting lotion to dry. Release the rollers and cover your hair with a bonnet, then go to sleep. You may have to do this twice a week, between shampoos, but the setting lotion should reinforce the curl and body and eliminate frizz.”
“If you still find that certain sections of your hair fall flat,” Edwards says, “try spraying a volumizing product like Matrix Vavoom Root Riser ($14, matrix.com) at the root before you style, and don’t forget to also fight frizzy ends with regular trims,” she adds
